The Twins have decided to postpone opening day and play it on Friday because of predicted weather.
The Twins were scheduled to open the season against the Seattle Mariners at Target Field on Thursday afternoon. With a rain and snow mixture, the Twins have decided to push that game to Friday afternoon at 3:10pm.
"If you have a built-in off day, we call it a weather protection day on our home opener, it makes sense to look at hard at using it," Twins President Dave St. Peter told WCCO Radio's Vineeta Sawkar on Wednesday morning. "There a lot of people involved in the discussion about whether or not to postpone."
St. Peter added that postponing made the most sense, especially when it came to thinking about overall fan experience.
"Seattle only comes to Minnesota once," he said. "The good news is we're going to have really good weather Friday and through the rest of the homestand, including during next week's homestand against the Dodgers."
In a Tweet on Monday, Twins Vice President of Communications and Content Dustin Morse said the team would make the decisions at minimum 24-hours in advance.
"We are watching weather closely. Any decision to shift the Opener to Friday will be made a minimum of 24 hours prior to Thursday's scheduled game time."
Tickets for Thursday's game will be honored for Friday's game.
Major League Baseball traditionally schedules an off day between opening day and the second game of a series for weather-related issues.
