The Minnesota Twins put right-hander Bailey Ober on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
"Last night postgame, he came in and talked to Nick (Paparesta) a little bit, and we wanted to see how it presented this morning," Shelton said. "And then the way it presented this morning, Nick felt it was an IL."
The Twins announced the move Sunday. Ober is 6-3 with a 4.59 ERA in 66 2/3 innings this season. He allowed seven earned runs and 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings in Saturday's loss at Pittsburgh.
Minnesota's pitching injuries have been an issue. Pablo López is out for the season following elbow surgery, and Mick Abel went on the IL in April with right elbow inflammation. Left-hander Kendry Rojas (left elbow) went on the IL earlier this week. Right-hander Garrett Acton (right shoulder) is on the 60-day IL, and right-hander Cole Sands (right forearm) hasn't pitched in more than a month.
The Twins are also in the midst of a brutal schedule, just coming off a 10-day road trip and playing 17 straight days, something that isn't lost on Shelton.
"We got seven more, so we got to figure it out and we got Joe (Ryan) going (Monday)," he said after Sunday's loss. "So I mean, this is probably the first time a lot of these guys have been on a 10-day road trip and it's the first time they've had 17 in a row. So we gotta keep going. But you know in Bailey's situation, he'll get some imaging tomorrow so and we'll kind of go from there."
Braxton Ashcraft struck out 11 in six innings, Ryan O’Hearn and Nick Gonzales homered, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the skidding Minnesota Twins 9-3 on Sunday to complete their three-game sweep.
Ashcraft (5-2) allowed two runs and five hits with no walks, sending the Twins to their fifth straight defeat.
Brooks Lee had a two-run homer in the sixth and a solo shot in the ninth for Minnesota.
