he Minnesota Twins placed right-hander Mick Abel on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation on Monday.
The move was made retroactive to Friday.
Abel, 24, is 1-2 with a 3.98 ERA in four games, including three starts. He set a career high with 10 strikeouts over seven innings in a 6-0 win over Boston on Tuesday night. Abel has not allowed a run in 14 consecutive innings.
The Twins said they would make a corresponding roster move before Tuesday night’s game at the New York Mets.
Abel was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies at last year’s trade deadline for closer Jhoan Duran.
The Twins are coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of Cincinnati, and will try to right the ship against the struggling Mets, who have lost 11-straight games. Despite the tough series against the Reds, Twins manager Derek Shelton thinks they're playing good ball overall, but the defense needs to get much better.
"We had an opportunity to win every game in this series and we didn't capitalize," Shelton said Sunday. "We didn't make plays that we need to make, and it ended up costing us games all three days. We got to watch it and move on because it was not a good series for us defensively in the infield and we just have to move on from that. There's nothing we can do about it now. We keep working, but yeah, we just need to play better in the infield."
Simeon Woods-Richardson will start for the Twins Tuesday.
