1 dead after car strikes protesters in Uptown

One person was taken into custody late Sunday night after driving a vehicle into a group of protesters gathered at West Lake Street and Girard Avenue South in Uptown.

Minneapolis Police said through a news release that police officers monitoring the protest on camera witnessed an eastbound vehicle drive into the a group of protesters at 11:39 p.m.

Two protesters were taken to HCMC with one of them "very critical" according to the Minneapolis police Twitter account. An adult female later died from their injuries.

The suspect, an adult male, was taken to the hospital after police say he was pulled from his vehicle by protesters, who struck him before he was arrested.

MPD spokesman John Elder told WCCO Radio's Susie Jones that so far they have not determined a motive.

"We are continuing to work towards finding what that motive is," Elder said. "Preliminary investigation by the traffic unit show there was possible drug or alcohol use and that could have been a contributing factor."

Protesters gathered earlier Sunday night near where Winston Smith was killed by a law enforcement task force on June 3. Authorities said Smith fired at them from inside his car as they surrounded him on the top floor of the parking garage at Seven Points, formerly known as Calhoun Square.

Smith was wanted on a Ramsey County warrant for being a felon in possession of a gun.

The woman in Smith's vehicle said through an attorney last week that he never had a weapon. Authorities have said that video footage from the incident is available.
