Thursday marks the 12th year of one Minnesota tradition known for raising millions of dollars for organizations across the state.

Last year, Give to the Max Day raised its highest amount ever with $21.6 million given to 5,610 non profits and schools in Minnesota.

"It ended up becoming Minnesota's annual giving tradition," said GiveMN executive director, Jake Blumberg, during the WCCO Morning News with Dave Lee on Thursday morning.

Giving comes at an important time as the COVID-19 pandemic has once again challenged Minnesotans.

"I think if this year has taught us anything it's to not try and project or expect anything," Blumberg said. "If there's ever a year for us as donors to dig deep, this is the year. Needs from nonprofits are more extreme than we've ever seen them before. Levels of hunger as high as we've ever seen since the Great Depression. This is a good time for us to come together and to give together."

Throughout the day Give MN awards organizations bonus "Golden Tickets" ranging between $500 and $1,000, which are added to the end totals.

Give to the Max Day runs a full 24-hours. Donate here.
