An investigation is underway after two unidentified people were found dead on Isle Royale.

At around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, the National Park Service says park rangers at Isle Royale National Park received two separate reports about two people who were found dead at a remote backcountry campground within the park.

Two rangers hiked overnight 11 miles to the campground to assess the situation, arriving early Monday morning, and confirmed the discovery.

The NPS said the two people found dead have yet to be identified, and it's not yet known how they died.

On Monday, additional ground and aviation resources were deployed to assist with the investigation, which is ongoing.

NPS said more information will be released once it's made available.

Isle Royale, located in northwest Lake Superior, along with the surrounding smaller islands and waters encompasses the Isle Royale area. While the island is closer to the mainland of Minnesota, it belongs to the state of Michigan and is famous for being Michigan's largest island, covering more than 206 square miles. It's also home to a relatively stable gray wolf population. The island and surrounding area is known for its extensive hiking trails, shipwrecks, historic lighthouses, ancient copper mines, and variety of wildlife.
