Already down to one lane, Highway 280 will completely shutdown Wednesday until the start of the State Fair

Northbound 280 closed on April 13th, says MnDOT Project Manager Clay Roessler.

"We've done a ton of concrete removals and we're starting to fill in where the bad concrete was taken out," Roessler explains.

Southbound's makeover begins Wednesday morning.

"What we're doing is we're just taking off the layer of concrete or asphalt and we're putting back new smoother, stronger pavement for the travelers to drive on, and this will last us another 20 years."

This means alternate routes.

"You obviously won't be able to get onto Mainline 280 at all," Roessler says. "There are no local detours. So if you're trying to like get on 280 and you exit Como, or get on at Larpenteur or something like that, we won't post that detour because there's no 280 to detour back to."

Roessler does explain one of the detours, highlighting the challenge it is going to be for drivers.

"If you're going southbound and you want to get to 94, there is no ramp from 35W to eastbound 94," he says. "So we have you go eastbound on 36, go all the way to 35E, and then go south. And then whip back onto 94, and then that'll get you back to the south end of trunk Highway 280."

• Expect short-term intermittent lane closures on cross streets while bridge work is being done
