Businesses near 50th and Penn in South Minneapolis are continuing to struggle in the wake of a main water break there last month.
Six businesses were impacted when flooding and foundation damage rocked the area on February 13, with three halting operations all together.
Lake Harriet Florist is still open but is fighting an uphill battle against rising repair costs.
"I don't think there's going to be any compensation from the city. We're still trying to work with insurance companies to try to get it from them," says La Harriet Floral Operations Manager Lesley Ruud.
She says right now she's feeling the effects of the major closures in the area.
"We would see the foot traffic of dads and their kids going to get coffee and then swinging by here to bring flowers for the moms for Mother's Day, and that part of that business is going to be gone," Ruud explains.
Penn Avenue South has reopened to traffic but West 50th Street remains closed between Penn and Oliver Avenues.
Ruud says they were among three stores that were able to remain open.
"You don't really fully appreciate the extent of the damage until sometimes days or even weeks later," says Ruud. "Both of the motors that keep our coolers running were below the floodlines. We need to get those replaced. These are all things that aren't just a couple $1,000 each, these are things that are tens of thousands of dollars and as a small business we just can't afford it."
She says the other three businesses have remained closed since the flood and that no one expects to see any compensation from the city.
