
A 6-year-old girl who was struck in the head by a stray bullet Monday evening in Minneapolis died on Wednesday according to her family.
Aniya Allen suffered a gunshot wound to the head on Monday when gunfire broke out near N. 36th and Penn Avenues. Allen and her mother were driving through the neighborhood when gunfire brokeout.
After the shooting, local peace activist KG Wilson confirmed that Allen was his granddaughter. Wilson took to social media Wednesday after her death.
"These maggots killed my 6-year-old granddaughter here in mpls after all I tried to do to help bring love compassion and Peace!" Wilson wrote in a Facebook post. "I just went from sad to mad. Right now all I want to know is who did this?"
Minneapolis police said the gunmen fled the scene before police arrived, however a city camera may have captured the shootout.
A GoFundMe has been set-up to help Aniya's family.
Allen is the third child to be shot in Minneapolis in the last three weeks.
Ten-year-old Ladavionne Garrett Jr. was shot while in the backseat of his parents car on April 29. Nine-year-old Trinity Smith was shot on Saturday as she jumped on a trampoline during a birthday party.
Both children remain hospitalized at North Memorial Hospital.
Aniya's death is the 28th homicide of the year in Minneapolis. 22 children have been shot this year and 189 people have been wounded or killed in shootings, compared with 75 at this point in 2020 according to Minneapolis police
