Police in the northern Minnesota town of Ely are investigating after an 80-year-old woman died after being “fully engulfed” by flames while on a motorized scooter.
Ely Police say it happened Monday outside the Boundary Waters Care Center, a senior living facility.
Authorities still have not said what may have started the fire. According to a police statement, when officers arrived the woman was fully engulfed in flames. The woman was taken to the Ely Hospital with severe burns and then transferred by air ambulance to a Duluth, Minnesota hospital where she later died of her injuries.
Police say the scooter was motorized and intended to help with "mobility issues," and that they hope to learn more from the State Fire Marshal’s Office within the coming week.
The woman's name has not yet been released.
