The Minneapolis City Council approved an ordinance that will allow for the Islamic call to prayer to be broadcast up to five times per day from loudspeakers anywhere in the city.
The vote on Thursday at historic Minneapolis City Hall changes a previous ordinance that allowed for the prayers only during certain times of the day and with volume restrictions.
The vote on the council was unanimous, and there was no organized community effort against the measure.
Minneapolis is the first city in the country to allow for the announcements to be made all day citywide.
