Lots of construction to deal with this weekend and MnDOT is warning drivers to be prepared for some major closures.
For starters, I-94 eastbound between Highway 280 and I-35E will be closed.
"We are working on bridges along that route. We're repairing and repainting nine bridges in this area," says Minnesota Department of Transportation spokesperson Kent Barnard.
There will be EZ Pass lane construction as well.
"On I-494 between Highway 100 and I-35W in each direction," says Barnard.
But wait - there's more.
"And we're also adding a new ramp at the 35W-494 interchange," Barnard explains. "We're also replacing bridges crossing over I-494 at Portland Avenue, Nicollet Avenue, and at 12th Avenue. So a lot of work going on down in that Bloomington, Richfield area."
Having so many projects at once is not unusual according to MnDOT. And it's necessary.
"There are a lot of needs, a lot of maintenance and a lot of construction needs throughout the state," he adds. "We have a very short construction season compared to other states, and we need to get the work done when we have good weather to work with."
All of these closures at once could be confusing, but Barnard says detours will be easy to spot.
"No, it shouldn't be confusing for anybody," he says. "They should just follow the sign detours or check out our 511mn.org website, and that'll have the information there too. Plus, the closures are in two different areas in the Twin Cities."
