Advocates for stricter gun control rallied at the State Capitol Thursday afternoon as the DLF-controlled legislature considers new measures.
Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan joined a host of others in an effort to push lawmakers to pass things like extreme risk protection laws, background checks on certain gun sales, and secure firearm storage.
Hundreds of volunteers with Moms Demand Action and Everytown Gun Safety filled the Capitol rotunda, a sight Shannon Watts loves.
“The fact that we are now 10 million supporters strong, we're twice as large as the NRA,” Watts says. “I mean, I think that's a testament to the power of type-A women and the multitasking ability of moms.”
Watts started Moms Demand Action ten years ago but she said this year in the state legislature feels different.
“The fact that we elected some of our own volunteers to office here, I met with them this morning, they're feeling very positive,” says Watts. “We have now a gun-sense trifecta, meaning the governor, the House and the Senate. And they were elected because Minnesotans want stronger gun laws.”
