Major road construction projects starting tonight in the Twin Cities. Or should we say, starting again? Or still?

"I'm gonna start off with our kina mega maintenance project that's gonna be wrapping up this weekend on eastbound I-694 between Shingle Creek Parkway and Brooklyn Center," says MnDOT spokesperson Kent Barnard. "We're gonna be inspecting and repairing bridge decks, repairing and re-striping pavement, cleaning and repairing storms, sewer, drainage structures, removing vegetation, repairing and replacing lighting, and removing graffiti on bridges and walls."

Barnard says crews will also be out working on the St. Croix River bridge between Minnesota and Wisconsin next week, and drivers may encounter daily lane and ramp closures as maintenance crews remove epoxy coating that has peeled off the driving surface of the bridge.

"As always, plan ahead, don't travel if you don't have to, take your time and be patient with us because we're out there doing things for you, not to you," he notes.

Weekend Projects

- Eastbound 694 is closing at 10:00 p.m. Friday from Shingle Creek Boulevard in Brooklyn Center to Snelling Avenue in Arden Hills. MnDOT says drivers should detour using Highway 169 to Highway 610 to 35W. The stretch is set to reopen Monday at 5:00 a.m.

- Highway 52 is closing in both directions between Concord Street and I-94. Northbound lanes will close from 7:00 p.m. Saturday to Monday at 5:00 a.m. The detour sends drivers from 494 to Highway 61 to Westbound 94.

- Westbound I-94 will be closed between I-35 E and Hwy 280. Traffic will be directed from northbound I-35 E to Hwy 36 to southbound Hwy 280.

- Additionally, southbound I-35 E will be closed between University Ave. and I-494. Traffic will primarily be directed from eastbound I-94 to Hwy 52 to westbound I-494. There will be an alternate I-35 E detour for Saturday, Aug. 2, from midnight to 5 a.m. where traffic will be directed from eastbound I-94 to Hwy 10 to eastbound I-494.

- Both directions of Highway 5 will be closed between Eden Prairie Road and Mitchell Road in Eden Prairie from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Traffic will be detoured using Highway 41 and Highway 212.

- Crews have also reduced both eastbound and westbound Highway 212 and Highway 5 to one lane between Interstate 494 and Eden Prairie Road in Eden Prairie through September to repair concrete pavement, as part of an improvement project. Motorists should expect delays.
