Another heads up for drivers with a major road closure this weekend in the south Metro.

Westbound Interstate 494 will be shut down Friday night between Highways 77 and 100.

All ramps will also be closed while crews continue construction along the interstate and prepare the area for what MnDOT is calling winter configuration.

The lanes are scheduled to reopen early Monday.

Crews are also closing eastbound 494 between I-35W and Highway 77 all day Saturday before reopening early Sunday as part of the construction work.

The project is a massive undertaking by MnDOT, which you know if you've driven along 494 recently.

They are busy constructing E-ZPass lanes from Hwy 100 to I-35W in each direction and adding a new ramp at the I-35W and I-494 interchange.

There will also be new bridges crossing over I-494 at Portland Ave., Nicollet Ave., and 12th Ave., and adding a new pedestrian bridge at Chicago Ave. that crosses over I-494 to provide an additional pedestrian and bicycle connection across I-494.

When work is completed, the E-ZPass lanes and the new ramp at the I-35W and I-494 interchange is expected address the heavy congestion that part of 494 typically sees.
