A life-saving Minneapolis-based organization is changing its name. Be The Match is now NMDP.
The changes comes as NMPD says their focus is no longer solely on marrow transplants, but cell therapies that stand to save many more lives.
Historically, NMDP stood for National Marrow Donor Program. But the organization says their work represents so much more than that.
"We’ve modernized the brand under a single name that’s flexible enough to meet our ambitious future," they tell WCCO Radio. "NMDP is no longer an initialism for any particular set of words. It is a representation of all the work we do."
NMDP has 7 million potential donors on its registry, providing over 7,400 cellular therapies to patients last year.
"We're expanding access so that every patient can receive their life saving treatment, we have the ambition to change the world, NMDP," said a cut from a promotional video the group released Monday.
WCCO Radio has partnered with the former "Be the Match" to host an on-air and online auction. In May of 2023, the inaugural event raised over $80,000 for the non-profit thanks to the generosity of WCCO listeners and clients.
"We are excited to share these efforts to accelerate progress, deliver world-class service and tackle the tough problems—from equity disparities to quality of life for patients," NMDP says in a press release. "Together, we can advance the cell therapy ecosystem and expand access to these life-saving therapies."
