U.S. News and World Report is out with its Best Hospitals list, which evaluates and ranks health care facilities across the country. Specifically, the lists are broken down on outcomes and more across specialties.
"The main thing that we want to be measuring and hoping patients understand, are the outcomes that hospitals achieve," says Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of Health Analysis. "So we have complex statistical algorithms that we apply to millions or records, of patient encounters with hospitals, to understand which hospitals are getting better outcomes than we expect."
Not surprisingly, Rochester's Mayo Clinic is ranked in the top five in the country in 10 specialties, including number one rankings in diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgeries along with pulmonary and lung issues.
