A bill being introduced at the Minnesota Legislature would help get people who've completed prison sentences help in reintegrating into society by giving them identification cards.
The idea is that the cards will help people who are done serving sentences get housing and employment. Senator Dave Osmek (R - Mound) is the Senate sponsor of the bill, which he says should not be controversial.
"This is not changing a sentence. This is not Voter ID. This is not felon voting. There's a lot of controversial things that could be added to this, and Representative (Erin) Koegel and I both are going to be goalies to kick back anything that is not prescriptive to what we are trying to do."
It's a bi-partisan measure, as Rep. Erin Koegel (DFL - Spring Lake Park) is the House sponsor.
"Our job is to remove barriers for people," said Koegel. "And to allow them to own up to their mistakes, and take care of themselves and loved ones."
