The Memorial Blood Centers announced Monday that there is a blood emergency as blood supplies have become “alarmingly” low and that anyone who can donate should.

Part of the reason behind the shortage is the warm weather and summer travel, according to a press release from Memorial Blood Centers. The release also shared that the current supply is at a 1-2-day level when the ideal level is 5-7 days.

“Hospitals and patients depend on eligible donors to give so others can receive lifesaving blood,” the release said.

The release added that summer is a difficult time of the year for donations with families traveling and school on break, resulting in shortages being consistently low for weeks.

Kathy Geist, Vice President of Memorial Blood Centers, shared that because of the shortages, they have declared another blood emergency.

“We are again calling on community members to come out, and we also ask that local companies encourage time off for their employees to fill available appointments in the coming weeks,” Geist said.

Memorial Blood Centers is the supplier of blood for more than 40 hospitals and 16 air ambulances throughout the region. To schedule an appointment to donate, visit their website here or call 888-GIVE-BLD.
