Vance Boelter state murder trial postponed until May

The two remaining attorneys on Vance Boelter's case say they don't anticipate any delays moving forward.

Vance Boelter state murder trial postponed until May

Vance Boelter was back in court Monday, with a judge weighing a temporary gag order issued in his state murder case, along with a request for change of venue. That court appearance ended with a delay in his trial. The state trial was scheduled to take place next month.

Judge Juan Hoyos rescheduled the trial to begin May 10, 2027 after Boelter reluctantly rescinded his request for a speedy trial in Hennepin County. He's already been convicted in federal court of killing Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the attempted murders of the Hoffman family, which came with a sentence of life in prison.

After being questioned on the record in court Monday morning by his attorney, Boelter initially said he did not want to waive his right to a speedy trial because "there is a lot that needs to come out."

But further questioning revealed his attorney doesn't believe they could provide Boelter's requests, or provide effective council due to so much evidence in the case to review by the November 2 deadline.

Boelter then said he would rather his attorneys have proper time to fully represent him.

Boelter faces two counts of first-degree premeditated murder in his state case, along with several other charges associated with those same murders, and the attempted murders of Sen. John Hoffman, his wife Yvette, and their daughter Hope.
