Two Brooklyn Park police officers have been cleared in their response to the June slaying of state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark during an alleged political assassination.

Officers Zachary Baumtrog and Jay Bloyer were performing a welfare check at the home of Mark and Melissa Hortman in the early morning hours of June 14 after state Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were shot inside their Champlin home.

Mark Hortman was found injured in the home's doorway, both officers performed a rescue, but he was later pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman was later found dead inside home.

The Minnesota BCA reported both officers witnessed Vance Boelter open fire when they arrived on scene, prompting Officer Baumtrog to return fire.

Brooklyn Park police say that their preliminary investigation found neither officer was aware of any victims in the home at the time, and that their actions were consistent with department policy and training.
