There are growing calls for Hennepin County Sheriff Dave Hutchinson to resign after his drunk driving crash and conviction last month.
Hutchinson stands firm in his decision to stay on the job, releasing a statement Friday.
"I am fully committed to continuing to serve the people of Hennepin County who elected me. I will let the citizens, not politicians, decide my future in November," read the statement.
Hutchinson received two years probation after pleading guilty to crashing his county-owned vehicle on Interstate 94 near Alexandria.
County Commissioners Marion Greene, Angela Conley and Chris LaTondresse have joined colleagues Irene Fernando and Jeffrey Lunde in requesting that the first term sheriff step down.
Greene, who is the board's chair, posted her feelings on Twitter.
Five of the seven county commissioners are now calling for Hutchinson to step down.
In addition, the Star Tribune Editorial Board Friday morning called for Hutchinson's ouster, saying that he has not been fully transparent in what occurred in early December during and after the incident in Alexandria.
"Serving is a privilege, and right now, it doesn't appear that he can do so effectively," John Rash of the StarTribune Editoral Board told Vineeta Sawkar on the WCCO Morning News.
The recent release of a search warrant has shed more light, showing that Hutchinson first told police at the scene that he was not driving the car.
One particular comment that has drawn criticism is from a WCCO TV interview where Hutchinson suggested that everybody has driven drunk in their lives at some point.
Hutchinson's first public interview was broadcast Dec. 26 on WCCO radio.
In it, Hutchinson said that he's in a treatment program, that he will not resign, and was planning to run for re-election.
