Charges have been filed against a man arrested for making violent threats near UnitedHealthcare in Minnetonka on Monday.
26-year old Ian Wagner has been charged with making violent threats, and of being in possession of a firearm unlawfully.
Wagner is accused of calling up the Minneapolis FBI office where he said he wanted to get inside the building and "shoot up the facility," according to the criminal complaint.
It also stated Wagner was "known" to police in Minnetonka. Wagner, in the call to the FBI, stated he was in the corporate parking lot with a loaded firearm. After a later search of the vehicle, a .38-caliber revolver was found with five rounds of ammunition along with a baggie filled with 16 more rounds.
"Whenever you get a situation where someone who is accused, or admits, to committing a very serious offense like murder or shooting someone, really social media, you have to be careful," Twin Cities defense attorney Joe Tamburino says. "People shouldn't, you know, lionize these people because it gets into dangerous territory. You might have copycats happening."
This all comes after the murder of UnitedHealthcare's CEO Brian Thompson in December. Since then, UnitedHealthcare has increased security.
Charging documents also show Wagner was facing previous charges of violating his parole and a restraining order, and that he allegedly called 911 before the incident threatening that if previous charges weren't dropped he would start shooting.
"When all of a sudden you've arrested someone who does have a history of violence or a history of harassment, or who's on probation for some criminal offense and then gets arrested again, that means it's a more serious situation," Tamburino adds.
Wagner is set to make his first court appearance Wednesday in Hennepin County. The man charged with killing Thompson is expected in court next week.
