The Minneapolis City Council voted Tuesday in favor of an audit of the Minneapolis Police Department following the suspicious death of an Indigenous woman last February.

Allison Lussier was found dead inside her apartment just 12 days after her family said she called police and reported being assaulted by her boyfriend.

Council member Robin Wonsley says family members have been asking for the review.

"And specifically the role that Minneapolis police played, or the lack that they, lack thereof, in investigating the details of her death," Wonsley says.

Lussier's manner of death was ruled undetermined by the medical examiner. Police Chief Brian O'Hara commented on the case Tuesday.

"When a case is classified by the medical examiner as undetermined, it becomes significantly more difficult to prove that a homicide occurred," O'Hara explained. "Despite this, the MPD has thoroughly investigated this case."

O'Hara did add that the department will continue to work with prosecutors with the county attorney's office.

"The MPD has presented this case to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office for consideration of charges, and we have been in continuous communication with the prosecutors assigned from their office," he says. "We remain committed to pursuing justice for Allison, and we will fully participate in any additional requests from the Hennepin County's Attorney's Office."

The full Minneapolis City Council will consider approving the review during Thursday's meeting.
