The family of Ricky Cobb II is speaking out Tuesday after charges against the Minnesota State Trooper who shot and killed him were dropped Sunday by Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty.
Bakari Sellers is the attorney representing Cobb's family and says their pursuit for justice won't stop, and they're drafting a letter to be sent out later Tuesday.
"Asking for the FBI and the Department of Justice, particularly the civil rights division, to come in and not only investigate the shooting of Ricky Cobb II, but based upon the Hennepin County Attorney's own recommendations, we want them to investigate the Minnesota State Patrol," explains Sellers.
Sellers was very critical of Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty's decision to drop all charges in the case.
"I think the only thing in the past 72 hours that we've heard of some level of honesty from Miss Mary, the Steptoe Firm, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, is that Ricky Cobb the second should be alive today," Sellers says.
The Cobb family plans to continue their civil case against Londregan. Cobb's mother recalled the moment she received the call that there was an update in the case.
"She called me as I was just fixing my baby's breakfast and we had a fun Sunday," she remembers. "Well, it wasn't very fun because I could feel the tension in her voice. And I ask one question. Is this good or bad? I'm not able to tell."
Moriarty, when the announcement the charges would be dropped Sunday, said it was the hardest decision she's ever had to make.
Speaking Monday at the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis, Moriarty said she felt Londregan used unreasonable force when he shot Cobb as he tried to flee the scene.
She blamed a lack of training and lax policy for state troopers, which she believes set off a chain reaction that resulted in Cobb's death.
There's been a lot of criticism against Moriarty's office in the last two days, from both those who wanted the prosecution of Londregan to continue, and others like Governor Tim Walz who felt charges should never have been filed in the case.
