A $35 million fund to help secure and protect Minneapolis during next month's Derek Chauvin trial has been approved by a Minnesota House committee.
Chauvin is the former Minneapolis officer who will stand trial in March on 2nd degree murder and manslaughter for the death of George Floyd.
In asking lawmakers to approve the money, Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said there cannot be a repeat of last summer, when rioting and looting destroyed businesses in South Minneapolis and beyond.
The vote was along party lines, with Republicans on the committee questioning why the state should be on the hook for protecting Minneapolis.
