A controversial copper-nickel mine proposal in the Iron Range is getting another look

NewRange Copper Nickel says plans for the NorthMet Project near Hoyt Lakes would shorten the mine's lifespan, and update how materials are transported and disposed.

"As we move forward now with proposed changes to this project, DNR is committed to a transparent and rigorous, independent review process that will be science-based, and will keep Minnesotans informed along the way," explains Assistant Minnesota DNR Commissioner Jess Richards.

A DNR review will decide whether or not the proposals need a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement, if the changes are substantial, and could significantly affect the environment.

Richards says everything needs to be reviewed before it moves forward.

"The company's project changes would probably require some new or amended permits, or other approvals from the state, or the federal government, or local governments," Richards adds. "But no permit decisions could be made until after the environmental review process is deemed adequate and complete."

That review by the DNR should take about a month.
