Coon Rapids police fatally shot a man armed with knife on Wednesday afternoon as they responded to a domestic incident at a home in the 300 block of 111th Avenue.
According to police, officers responded to a 911 call just after 12:00 p.m. about a woman who had been "cut with a knife." Police made contact with the suspect from outside the home and attempted to "deescalate the situation" before officers heard a female scream and flee the home with another man.
Investigators say the suspect was armed with a knife and that an officer discharged a 40 mm less lethal round after the suspect ignored repeated commands to drop the knife.
Officers eventually entered the home in an attempt to arrest the man and an officer fired another less lethal round. A third officer then discharged a firearm, hitting the man, as he moved toward police. A fourth officer deployed a taser as the man tried to get up.
The suspect was taken to Mercy Hospital where he later died. The woman was also hospitalized for her injuries and her condition hasn't been released, while the other man at the scene was unharmed.
Officers involved in the incident are on standard administrative leave and were wearing body cameras that were in use at the time. The Minnesota BCA is handling the investigation.
