An Alexandria couple has been arrested for felony theft after allegedly stealing hundreds of yard signs from across the city.
Judd and Wendy Hoff were arrested Saturday after a search warrant was served at their home and officers uncovered 244 stolen yard signs worth over $1,000.
Judd Hoff is running for State House Seat 12-B against incumbent Republican Mary Franson.
Earlier, Franson accused Hoff of digging through her trash, sending her threatening messages, and posting her contact information online.
Alexandria Police Chief Scott Kent says it wasn't just political yard signs that were stolen.
"There were campaign signs of various different people running for office this fall," says Kent. "There were also special event signs that we had throughout our community. So we had a lot of those signs taken as well as signs taken in support of different organizations. So it was kind of a non-discriminatory theft if you will."
Chief Kent says the most expensive sign stolen was over $300 and the total cost makes it a felony.
Kent says its unclear why they stole the signs but the crime is being taken seriously.
"The total dollar value was well over $1,000 which long term could mean a prison sentence," Kent explains. "I'm not sure what that is. It has to go through the court process and, you know, convictions or guilty pleas, whatever that looks like."
Judd Hoff has had several run-ins with police and was convicted of felony assault after a machete-wielding incident in 2020.
