Court likely to decide on continuance, change of venue motion tomorrow

We could hear as soon as tomorrow about motions filed by the Derek Chauvin defense team in response to Friday’s 27-million dollar settlement announcement between the city and family of George Floyd.

Attorney Eric Nelson called the timing gravely concerning and prejudicial. He requested a delay, a change of venue and sequestering the jury. Today Nelson brought up a Washington Post story that cited an anonymous city official who said the city consulted with Hennepin County Chief District Court Judge Todrick Barnette who gave the OK.

Cahill says the court has no authority and no involvement.

Cahill also said the seven jurors seated in the first week of the trial will be brought back and questioned to see if they saw the news of the settlement and if it affects their impartiality.
