The Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously Friday to approve a legal agreement with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights that would change how the police department functions.
The vote follows months of negotiations between city officials and the state agency, which sued the city following the murder of George Floyd in 2020.
Last year, the department issued a scathing report over the MPD's training practices and patterns of racial discrimination.
An official consent decree would determine police department practices moving forward that are legally enforceable.
The US Department of Justice is doing its own investigation into whether or not the MPD has engaged in unlawful practices.
