A man who's life sentence was commuted in 2020 has been charged with firearm and drugs possession.
Myon Burrell was arrested in Robbinsdale this week after police saw him speeding and driving over the center line of the road. Charging documents state that an officer smelled marijuana when Burrell rolled down the car's window and that he resisted arrest after failing a field sobriety test.
A gun and marijuana were found in the vehicle. Burrell spent 18 years behind bars after receiving a life sentence for the 2002 murder of 11-year old Tyesha Edwards.
That sentence was commuted after an independent legal panel found evidence that could have exonerated Burrell was either ignored or minimized.
The Dakota County Attorney's Office took over this week's case due to a potential conflict of interest involving work Burrell did on Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarity's 2022 election campaign. Burrell was a paid worker on Moriarty's campaign staff.
