The Minnesota State Senate approved an $880 million compromise public safety package that includes two key provisions on gun safety.
The measure includes background checks for gun purchases between two private parties, and a red flag bill that allows a judge to take away a gun from someone deemed at risk of causing harm.
The bill passed along party lines 34-33 in the DFL-controlled Senate.
Democrats say the bill will make Minnesota safer, while GOP leadership claims the measure won't stop gun violence.
If the House approves it, the bill then goes to Governor Walz, who says he will sign it into law.
