The DNR is announcing that it will be expanding its all-terrain wheel chair program to additional state parks within the state on August 1st.
State Park Consultant Jamie McBride says the program launched in 2022 and in its pilot year was received with excitement from the disabled community.
“Some people have been using wheelchairs their whole lives and haven’t been able to get out in this way in the past,” says McBride. “That independence has been, we’ve heard the words life-changing. Our vision is unbelievable outdoor recreation experiences and if we can provide a tool for people with disabilities, or people who use a wheelchair for everyday life to get out there, we want to do that.”
Track chairs are all-terrain, electric powered chairs that can be used on designated trails within the park. These chairs can help visitors explore areas of the state parks in new ways, often on trails that are not suitable for regular wheelchairs.
Track chairs are available year-round in some locations, and seasonally in others. The DNR is asking people to please call ahead to ensure a track chair will be available during your visit.
There is no cost to use an all-terrain track chair, but visitors will need a state park vehicle permit. Minnesota residents who qualify for disability parking can get a reduced rate year-round vehicle permit for $12.
The chairs are available in the following state parks as of August 1, 2023. Click here for more information.
