A man is dead after he was mauled by four pit bull dogs in Brooklyn Center Thursday afternoon.

Brooklyn Center police said the attack happened behind a house in the 5700 block of N. Halifax Avenue and that the victim had, "extensive bites on most of his body."

The victim, whose identity hasn't been released, was taken to a nearby hospital where he died Thursday night.

Police deployed a less lethal round when they arrived at the scene. That round struck one of the dogs and caused the other three to disperse.

The residents in the home were not the dogs' owners and the man who died was a family member taking care of the four dogs. Police are working to determine what prompted the dogs to attack the man. It's unclear if anyone will face criminal charges.

The dogs will be on quarantine pending a dangerous dog process and further investigation.
