
Police in Edina are investigating after officers caught a group of young people trying to steal a car.
Police say they got a report that the group had first stolen a car in Inver Grover Heights before they turned up in Edina.
According to law enforcement, the group was able to steal another car and took off when police arrived on scene, speeding through neighborhoods and ended up crashing near Highway 62 and Tracy Avenue.
Around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, Edina Police received reports of a group of people stealing a Toyota Tacoma near the 5100 block of Abercrombie Drive. The group was driving a black Kia, stolen from Inver Grove Heights.
While officers were on their way into the neighborhood, the Tacoma and Kia vehicles started driving at high rates of speed through various neighborhoods to leave the city according to police. The Tacoma drove into St. Louis Park and was later recovered in Minneapolis.
The suspects ran away from the crash, but one juvenile who was hurt in the crash was taken into custody. Two more were quickly found and arrested. Later on Tuesday, Edina arrested two more bringing the total to five.
The two additional juveniles were found hiding near the 5900 block of Hanson Road. They were taken into custody. There were five total juveniles arrested for this morning's incident. Their ages are 15, 15, 12 and 11. One suspect's age is unknown.
Police say they found a handgun in one of the cars. Charges against all three are pending.
The crash and crime scene closed the exit to Tracy Avenue for a time Tuesday morning leading to backups.
