Around the state, many are reacting to the news that former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was stabbed while in a prison in Arizona, where he is serving time for the murder of George Floyd.

Chauvin was reportedly in stable condition when officials last gave an update after being stabbed by another inmate on Friday.

Former Hennepin County Judge Kevin Burke, who is not associated with the case, says Chauvin was duly convicted and should be able to serve time in prison without fear of violence.

“Certainly Derek Chauvin is not somebody who is beloved by anyone except probably his closest family, but he didn’t deserve to be stabbed, nor does any inmate, nor does any guard,” Burke said, adding that the entire situation was “sad.”

Chauvin’s attorney says the prison was poorly run and that Chauvin is a target, as other inmates want to make a name for themselves by killing him.
