There's a renewed effort to get more blood donations this month across the state.

When it comes to blood donations in Minnesota, Memorial Blood Centers says there's good news. Throughout August, they're offering free beer and free ice cream to donors through its fourth annual "Pint for a Pint" campaign.

"We have seen the numbers start to pick up in our mobile drives," says marketing manager Corey Bianchi-Rossi . "We have motor drives throughout the cities, and even in the Northland. And we have plenty of drives all the way from International Falls, all the way down to the Iowa border."

Bianchi-Rossi says there's still a summertime donation dip. Overall blood collections are down 25% over the summer months.

"Because we provide our hospitals and EMS units and whatnot with the blood needed to help save lives, essentially," she adds. "What that does is that can put some patient care at risk."

Those who donate will get a free CraftTapped three month membership. Twin Cities donors will receive a voucher for a free MN Nice Cream treat.

"You can be a hero, you can be a lifesaver just by giving one hour of your time," Bianchi-Rossi concludes. "You know, you don't need a medical degree, you don't need millions of dollars, you just need one hour, one arm, and the willingness to go in there and spend that time. Allow that one pint to save up to three lives."

You can find more information on donating blood, and more about their Pint for a Pint promotion by clicking here. The promotion does end Aug. 31. Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month.

“Every pint counts, especially in the summer, and we are so grateful to CraftTapped and MN Nice Cream for coming together to support the critical need,” said Kathy Geist, Vice President at Memorial Blood Centers. “We hope this fun incentive will inspire folks to donate blood and enjoy a refreshing beverage on us. Blood donations are needed now more than ever.”
