The funeral service for Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell will be held next week according to information released by the city and the Department of Public Safety.
Mitchell was killed in the line of duty on May 30.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Maple Grove Senior High School.
More information will be released in the coming days about about the specifics of the service, including the route of the procession to the school.
A shooting the evening of May 30 left three dead including a officer Mitchell. Police were responding to a call of shots fired in the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue South in Minneapolis. That's where officer Jamal Mitchell died of gunshot wounds in what Police Chief Brian O'Hara described as an ambush.
"Jamal stopped, got out of the car, was putting medical gloves on and approaching the individual, the first individual who was the person that ultimately killed him, and started to ask him if he was hurt and if he was okay," explained Chief O'Hara. "Kind of sizing up the scene, when he is very unexpectedly ambushed, assassinated, very callously, very violently. He may never have even seen it coming."
It'll be the second significant law enforcement funeral in Minnesota in 2024 after three first responders were shot and killed in Burnsville earlier this year.
