If you're driving out of town this holiday weekend, here's what you need to know about filling up that gas tank - despite gas prices in Minnesota being slightly up from a month ago, we're still cheaper than the national average.

"Gas prices started declining last August and have come up a little bit in 2025," Minnesota Department of Commerce's Pete Wyckoff told WCCO. "But they're at pretty low levels by historical standards, particularly if you take into account inflation. And Minnesota prices are about 15 cents lower than the national average, which is where they tend to be actually."

And since we get the bulk of our crude oil from Canada, the recent actions in the Middle East have not affected prices at the pump.

"When prices rise anywhere, they rise everywhere, but I don't see any evidence of an upcoming price spike," Wyckoff explained.

Which means the price of gas won't hold back people from traveling.

Compared with the national average, gas in Minnesota is about 15-cents cheaper with prices hovering around $3 a gallon.

That's good news for motorists traveling this holiday weekend.

"We track gasoline supply here at the Department of Commerce and we don't see the signals you might see ahead of a rise in prices. So I think people will be able to travel this weekend knowing that the gasoline that they're using is not gonna be a huge expense compared to recent years," says Wyckoff.

He also said that despite prices in Minnesota being slightly up from a month ago, they're certainly down from this time last year.
