The Republican controlled Minnesota Senate says if extra police are needed in Minneapolis for the upcoming Derek Chauvin trial, those costs should be paid by Minneapolis.
A bill is being introduced that would use local government aid (LGA) that Minneapolis receives to reimburse other law enforcement agencies who provide mutual aid.
Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka (R-Nisswa) says other cities don't want to send officers to Minneapolis if they won't get paid for it.
"The city of Minneapolis, the city council, is not doing their part, and that's why we're going this direction."
Gazelka pointed out that the Governor still has the ability to call the National Guard and State Patrol using state money.

Governor Tim Walz (D) is proposing a $35 million fund to handle social unrest that is expected during the trial for Chauvin, the former Minneapolis officer accused of killing George Floyd. The trial starts next month.
