Classes at Stewartville High School in Olmsted County have been canceled Friday after a shooting in the parking lot injured a school wrestler.
According to law enforcement, school wrestlers were getting on the bus, and a student was walking in parking lot. That student was shot and then the shooter, identified as an adult, took his own life.
"One of the teammates was walking in the parking lot when a gunshot was heard by others," Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson said in a Friday morning press briefing. "The victim was located on the ground in the parking lot, I might add, by coaching staff, as other staff and students were looking around at that moment to see what had happened. They heard a second shot."
The student is listed in critical but stable condition in the hospital.
Torgerson was quick to credit the school staff and coaches for helping in a critical situation.
"And they responded, I got to give those guys credit," he says. "They did a phenomenal job, you know, clearly not expecting to do that, to render aid in that manner, but they did a phenomenal job."
The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office says the gunman took his own life just moments after shooting the student.
"This is an incredible difficult day for our community," added Stewartville Public Schools Superintendent Belinda Selfors. "In times like these, it is important that we come together to support each other. I ask that we show grace and kindness, avoid speculation, and keep supporting one another."
They have said there is no ongoing threat to the public. As of right now, it's unclear what if any relationship the student and adult may have had. There was no motive or reason provided for the shooting, or information on whether or not the student was targeted.
