Saint Paul Police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead early Wednesday morning in the city's Frogtown neighborhood.

Sgt. Mike Ernster said officers responded just before 1:00 a.m. to the area of Lafond Avenue and Grotto Street North after multiple 911 callers reported shots being fired and that someone had been shot.

"Some callers were reporting shots fired, some reported hearing people screaming, others reported hearing vehicles speed into and out of the area," Ernster said. "Another was reporting that someone had been shot."

Police did not find the victim at the scene. A 911 caller told police the victim was taken to Regions Hospital in a private vehicle. That's where the man was pronounced dead a short time later.

"We know there was a lot of people that witnessed this based on what the 911 callers were saying," added Ernster. "Our investigators have spoken to some, but we believe there are others out there that know what happened."

Information about the case can be shared with St. Paul police by calling 651-266-5650.

Wednesday's homicide marked St. Paul's seventh of the year, compared to eight at the same time last year.

Ernster said these incidents have an impact on the community.

"I can only imagine that it is extremely frightening for a community to wake-up to gunshots, or even wake-up the news that somebody had been killed in your neighborhood. The incidents have ripple effects in the neighborhood. It effects the family of the victim, the people living there, and our city."

Police haven't made any arrests. The victims identity and cause of death will be released following an autopsy.
