An overflowing water tank in the IDS Center in downtown Minneapolis became a close call for some businesses in the state’s tallest building.
According to the owners of the building, part of the building saw some flooding which mainly affected electrical equipment. There were some reports of a few floors needing to evacuate.
The full statement from Accesso, the building’s ownership, reads:
“The safety of IDS Center tenants and visitors is our top priority. Following a routine replacement of our water meter by the City of Minneapolis yesterday, a water expansion tank in our chiller room overflowed, and this impacted some of our electrical equipment. Out of an abundance of caution, we have evacuated the impacted floors of the building, starting at the 26th floor, and turned off the power to that area to allow the electrical equipment to dry out.”
WCCO Radio reached out to one of the law firms on one of the buildings upper floors who said they were not affected by the water or the electrical shutdown.
There was a period of time that the building managers had to cut power to some areas. Several radio and television stations, including those owned by WCCO’s parent company Audacy, use the IDS to provide antenna service to the transmitter sites. At the time power was being shut off in the building, they could not determine which stations would have been affected.
There’s no word as to any stations being knocked off the air due to the disruption however.
