The University of Minnesota is increasing security measures in dorms and campus buildings in response to recent safety breaches.
The office of Housing and Residential Life is highlighting some of it's new security features in several dorms on campus, including restricted access to communal bathrooms and U Card access requirements at all campus buildings.
Residential Life interim director Susan Stubblefield says there's one issue that rises above them all.
"We installed our first turnstiles and that method is really designed to assist with tailgating, when somebody who's unauthorized will follow someone else into one of our residential spaces," she says.
Live feed monitors and additional turnstiles are being considered in other buildings on campus as the university's safety plan continues to expand.
Stubblefield says the response comes from repeated issues of unauthorized people entering campus buildings.
"Our partnership with the Department of Public Safety has been very helpful because they have really helped us understand what's happening on campus, really looking at the total area around the campus and thinking more strategically about ways that we can be proactive," Stubblefield explained.
