The Rotarians are coming.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is expected to announce Monday afternoon that the International Rotary Convention will take place in Minneapolis in 2029.
At least 15,000 Rotarians from 150 countries are expected to attend, with a local economic impact of more than $50 million. The last two in-person conventions brought 11,000 people to Houston in 2022, and 12,000 people to Melbourne, Australia this past year. Prior to the pandemic, well over 20,000 people had attended the conventions. They were virtual in 2020 and 2021.
This year's Rotary Convention is in Singapore. That is followed by Calgary, Tapai, Honolulu, and Manila. Singapore's takes place in May while the others are in June.
The Rotary is among the largest service organizations in the world. Its members are comprised of business, professional, and community leaders.
Walz along with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, International Rotary Vice President Pat Merryweather-Arges, local Rotarians and Minneapolis host committee members will make an official announcement later Monday afternoon.
