Broadcasters from around the country are in Washington D.C. this week asking Congress to keep AM radio in vehicles through the recently introduced AM For Every Vehicle Act.

Audacy Twin Cities senior vice president and market manager Jeff Gonsales discussed the importance of pushing lawmakers to support the effort.

“Some of our leaders are a little unsure about a mandate,” Gonsales said. “Which, then we remind them that this is a safety issue and there’s been all kinds of safety features that have been mandated in cars and automobiles.”

Gonsales says there’s been a mostly positive response from the individuals he’s spoken to about the proposed legislation.

However, there are still automakers that are not supportive of keeping AM radio in their vehicles, no matter its importance.

“There are still seven automakers that are not putting AM radio in their cars,” Gonsales said. “For a lot of our rural and farm listeners and people outside of the metro, they rely on [News Talk 830 WCCO] and AM radio for their news and important weather information.”

AM radio proponents say it’s essential for the efficiency and reliability of the Emergency Alert System. They also say it is more reliable than cell towers when it comes to relaying emergency information.
