Not only is it going to be hot on Monday, it's going to be hot for a while throughout Minnesota. The forecast calls for 90-degree heat in the Twin Cities all the way through Thursday, with heat indices making it feel like 100 degrees. And no rain is expected.
"We just don't have any way of breaking down this large heat dome that's kind of taking residence over both the upper Mississippi Valley and even into the Ohio Valley," said National Weather Service forecaster Joe Calderone.
There is an extreme heat warning in the Twin Cities right now, and it won't be lifted until at least Thursday.
"At some point Friday and into the weekend, there's going to be a small break," said Calderone. "It's not going to be, all of a sudden, massive air mass change. It's still going to be warm, but, by the end of the week, just not the extent that we're seeing right now."
Much of Minnesota is expected to feel the heat all week; even way up north. The nation's ice box is going to be experiencing the big defrost this week. Predictions indicate the heat dome stalled over much of the U.S. could bring triple-digit temperatures to International Falls.
The place that gets into the deep freeze every winter has record 100 degrees only four times in recorded history. The hottest it's ever been in I-Falls is 103 degrees on July 22nd, 1923. The record high for July 13th in International Falls is 93 degrees, set back in 1983.
The Salvation Army's Twin Cities service centers will once again be open as cooling centers during these extremely hot days. Those seven service centers will operate under normal business hours for anyone trying to get out of the heat.
