The Minnesota Emblems and Redesign Commission has made its choice, selecting what will now be the state’s new flag. However, the decision didn’t come without some tension at the latest meeting.

Some at the meeting highlighted that the selection process has created an uproar, with many upset about the choices.

But in the end, the commission made its decision.

The new flag features a blue abstract shape of Minnesota with a white eight-pointed star in the middle, and the rest of the flag is a solid lighter color blue.

Secretary of State Steve Simon says there had been complaints from the public that the final design concept, which featured three stripes, made it look too much like flags of other countries.

“I’ll note that the Iowa flag is basically the French flag with a logo in the middle of it, but I don’t hear people saying the French are taking over Iowa,” Simon said.

The new flag and state seal will be formally adopted on May 11 of next year, which is the 166th anniversary of Minnesota becoming a state.
