The judge who presided over the manslaughter trial of former Brooklyn Park officer Kimberly Potter is retiring.
68-year-old Regina Chu was appointed to the bench in 2002 by Gov. Jesse Ventura.
She became Minnesota's first Asian-American female district judge.
The Commission on Judicial Selection Thursday announced the vacancy in Minnesota's fourth judicial district.
In February, Chu became emotional when handing down Potter's sentence in the shooting death of Daunte Wright.
Potter received a two-year sentence, about one-third shorter than state guidelines.
Chu was also the target of a protest in which a man entered an condominium building that he thought was hers.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota and Williams Mitchell College of Law, Chu in 1980 became a clerk in the Minnesota Supreme Court and later a special assistant attorney general.
She was working in private practice at the time of her appointment on July 22, 2002.
Her current term expires in the fall.
